About

Marise Maas (b.1969) is a Dutch born, Melbourne based artist. Her work deals with making the ‘unimportant’ important, by looking at the smaller details to find the bigger stories.

“Examining Marise Maas’ paintings is like peering into a series of little precarious worlds – each bearing the trace of some implicit, destabilising truth” ...read more

“I love the feeling of childlike wonder and naivety in Marise’s work. Her line drawings are so simple and restrained yet are rich with symbolism and subliminal meaning “  …..read more        Lucy @ The Design Files

“For 25 years painting has dominated the world of Marise Maas, as she continues in her chase to capture beauty within the ordinary. The act of painting has become her daily medication…read more

“Horses have reoccured in the paintings for years, I loved them always and all my early drawings were of horses, [they were] probably the first thing I ever drew. I’ll use the horses as stand-ins for people. Horses are easier to draw and better looking I think. Plus people seem to read way too much into it when I’m using human figures.”        Marise Maas

“In the late 80’s and early 90’s I studied print making at the Art School in Hobart, Tasmania. A few years later I was doing etchings and collographs at Grafisch Atelier in Haarlem in the Netherlands.

Around this time I became more serious about painting and took a long break from print making. Twenty years of exhibiting paintings later, I’ve recently started printmaking again.

Currently working on a series of 4 prints with the good people at Dangerfork Print Co in Collingwood, Melbourne. The first one is a limited edition screen print called City Horse”        Marise Maas
